තිරුකෝනේස්වරම් කෝවිල, Thirukoneswaram Hindu Temple

-ඒස්වරම් ප්‍රත්‍යයෙන් නම අවසාන වන සුප්‍රකට ශ්‍රී ලාංකේය කෝවිල් 5න් එකකි. වසර 6500ක ඉතිහාසයකට උරුමකම් කියන බව හින්දු පූජකයින් විශ්වාස කරන තිරුකෝනේස්වරම් කෝවිල රාම රාවණා යුගයේ සිටම පැවැත එන බව ඔවුන්ගේ විශ්වාසයයි. නමුත් අද ෆ්‍රෙඩ්රික් කොටුවෙ උච්ඡතම ස්ථානය වූ ස්වාමි කන්දේ මුදුනත අපට දක්නට ලැබෙන කෝවිල 1963දී අළුත්වැඩියා කර ඇත. කණු දහසකින් සමන්විතව තුබූ විවිධ ධනයන්ගෙන් හෙබි පැරණි තිරුකෝනේස්වරම් දේවාලය 1620 දශකයේදී පෘතුගීසි ආක්‍රමණිකයන් විසින් සමතලා කරවූ බව වාර්තා වේ. ශිව දෙවියන් උදෙසා ලොව පුරා ඉදි කර ඇති දේවාල අතරින් වඩාත්ම බලවත් දේවාලය මෙය බව බැතිමතුන්ගේ විශ්වාසයයි. කෝවිලේ ප්‍රධාන උත්සවය වාර්ෂිකව අප්‍රියෙල් මාසයේදී පැවැත්වේ. දෛනික පූජාවන් උදෑසන 7.15, 11 සහ සවස 4 යන වේලාවන්හී පැවැත්වේ. දහවල් කාලය වන විට තිරුකෝනේස්වරම් කෝවිල අවට භූමිය අව්වෙන් ගිනියම් වීම නිසා ඇවිදීම දුෂ්කරය. ගිනියම් වැල්ලේ කිසිඳු කඩිමුඩියකින් තොරව සක්මනේ යෙදෙන හින්දු භක්තිකයෝ ඔවුන් මෙම ස්ථානයට දක්වන ගෞරවය විද්‍යාමාන කරයි. හින්දූ බැතිමතුන්ගේ පූජනීය සිද්ධස්ථානයක් වන තිරුකෝනේස්වරම් කෝවිලට පාවහන් හිස්වැසුම් ගලවා ඇතුළු වී සංවරව හැසිරෙන මෙන් අප කාරුණිකව සංචාරක ඔබෙන් ඉල්ලමු.

ෆ්‍රෙඩ්රික් කොටුව අභ්‍යන්තරයේ පිහිටා ඇති නිසා පළමුව ෆ්‍රෙඩ්රික් කොටුවට ඇතුළු විය යුතුය. කොටුවට ඇතුළු වූ පසු මාර ගස් පේළිය පසු කරමින් ස්වාමි කන්ද තරණය කළ විට තිරුකෝනේස්වරම් කෝවිලට ලඟා විය හැකිය. මෙම ගමනේදී අවට පරිසරයේ චමත්කාරජනක දසුන් සහ ඔබ මොබ පිය නගන මුවන් නිරීක්ෂණයට අමතක නොකරන්න. කන්ද පාමුල මාර ගස් හෙවනේ ඇති යුද හමුදා සුභසාධක කැන්ටිම ගමනේ විඩාව නිවයි. කෝවිලට මදක් පෙරටුව පිහිටි කඩ පෙළින් අවශ්‍ය පූජා භණ්ඩ මිලට ගත හැකි අතර එතැනින්ද විඩාව නිවා ගත හැකිය. කෝවිල අසලටම සැහැල්ලු වාහනයකින් ලඟා විය හැකි වුවත් පරිසරයේත් ගමනේත් සොඳුරුකම රසවිඳින්නට නම් කෝවිලට පයින් පැමිණීම වඩාත් යෝග්‍යය.

One of the 5 famous kovils that end with the -eswaram phrase in Sri Lanka. According to the Hindu prelates, this Hindu temple has a history of 6500 years and is believed to have been constructed during the era or Rama & Ravana. But it's quite obvious that the Kovil situated on the Swamy rock, which is the highest point of Fort Frederick was renovated in 1963. The historical temple which had 1000 pillars and many riches was razed by the Portuguese invaders during the 1620s. From all the Hindu temples built in honor of God Siva this is believed to be the most powerful by devout Hindus. The main festivities of the kovil takes place during the month of April, annually. Daily masses are conducted at 7.15am, 11.30am & 4.00pm. During the daytime it's quite difficult to walk about in the area surrounding Thirukoneswaram kovil due to the unbearable heat of the surface. But the respect Hindus have for this place is showcased by the ease in which they travel about in this scorching hot sand and rock surface. We kindly request you to enter the kovil premises after removing footwear and headwear and behave appropriately since this is a much venerated place for the Hindus.

How to get there...

Since the kovil is located within the walls of Fort Frederick, first you have to enter to the fort. Once entered into the fort pass the large shady Mara trees and climb Swamy cliff to reach Thirukoneswaram Hindu Temple. Don't forget to observe the serenity of the surrounding and the deer that roam around while you climb to the top of the cliff. The Army Welfare canteen at the foot of the cliff under a shady Mara tree is a perfect resting spot. A few vendors just before the kovil sell necessary items for the religious observances at Thirukoneswaram and one can refresh yourself here as well. You can reach as far as the entrance of Thirukoneswaram using a light vehicle but it is recommended to come on foot to enjoy the hike and the refreshing environment.
