දියලුම පාලම | Diyaluma Bridge

Diyaluma is one of the most intricate waterfalls in Sri Lanka, and this is not just because it's the third tallest in the country. Diyaluma is 220m in height and is the world's 432nd tallest waterfall. Punagala Oya, which is a tributary of Kirindi Oya feeds this magnificent waterfall located off Koslanda in the Badulla District. Diyaluma touches the ground near the famed A4 highway, bringing the weary traveler a breathtaking aura. Those who would venture out to spend a few minutes and recharge your batteries at Diyaluma will be rejuvenated by the cold and foggy water drops in the surrounding environment.

The origins of the name Diyaluma can be tracked backed to ancient Sinhala names "Diya Heluma" or "Diya Haluma" which literally means a dripping water. Some historians also recognize the fall as "Jalaja Pahana" which means water lamp, this probably is to draw parallels with the aesthetic look of the waterfall. To one side of the waterfall is a plain which is high in biodiversity. The plain is known for leopards and other rare species.

Diyaluma is very sprightful during the rainy season. Although there's a considerable dip in the water level during the dry season, it's a beautiful sight to see how the water falling off of the waterfall ledge are scattered into tiny particles by the gusting wind.

How to get there

If you are coming Colombo and its suburbs, you have to reach Beragala via Ratnapura and Balangoda along the A4 highway. From Beragala you're supposed to continue on the A4 highway which spans downward towards the right hand side of the junctions. Travel 23km along the A4 from Beragala, passing Koslanda where you will come across Diyaluma towards your left hand side. If you're traveling from Kataragama, Ampara, Hambantota or Matara, you will come across Diyaluma 13km from Wellawaya along the A4 road towards Colombo.

If you plan on reaching Diyaluma by public transport, you will have to reach Beragala or Wellawaya and take a bus that travels along the A4 to get to Diyaluma. Please note that Diyaluma is located quite a distance away from the railway line.

සුප්‍රකට සිංහ හිස | The head of the infamous lion

It's a well known fact that Sri Lanka has had 8 ancient capitals over its history, these are also considered to be the ancient kingdoms of Sri Lanka. Out of these, the fourth one, Yapahuwa, was one of the most short-lived kingdoms. Located in the dry zone of the north-western part of the country, Yapahuwa is built surrounding a sizable rock as a fortress city. The purpose of establishing Yapahuwa as a fortress city was to safeguard the kingdom and the Holy Tooth Relic (Sinhalese people believe that the custodian of this holy relic to be the rightful ruler of the island) from south Indian invaders. Another unique characteristic of this ephemeral capital is that only one king ruled from Yapahuwa, that was King Buwanekabahu I.

Considered to be a key phase in ancient Sri Lanka, Yapahuwa boasts ruins of fortresses, moats, dagobas, temples as well as royal dwellings. However, Yapahuwa has earned worldwide appraise for it's uniquely steep staircase that leads up to the landing that used to house the Temple of Tooth as well as the masterful rock carvings that adorn the the topmost part of the said staircase.

Importance and Historic Background

With the demise of King Wijayabahu IV, the Holy Tooth Relic is moved from Dambadeniya to Yapahuwa from protection. This leads to King Wijayabahu IV's brother, Prince Buwanekabahu being crowned as King of Sri Lanka in 1271 A.D. King Buwanekabahu I ventures into building a fortress town surrounding the Yapahuwa rock to protect the Holy Tooth Relic. The Temple of Tooth was built on a landing halfway up the Yapahuwa rock. Although the Temple of Tooth is no more, the majestic stairwell leading up to the landing is still in tact. The stone carvings adorning the last flight of stairs attest to the grandeur of the ancient Sinhala artists. Out of these carvings, the two lion figures adorning the two sides of the stairwell are of pristine beauty and are world renowned as a masterpiece. The last printed Rs. 10 note carries the majestic image of the Yapahuwa lion. It should also be noted that the stairs, leading up to the landing which used to house the Temple of Tooth, are very narrow. This had been done intentionally to push back hasty foreign invaders.

ගල මුදුනත නටඹුන් වූ චෛත්‍යයක් | A ruined dagoba at the top of the peak

The Yapahuwa citadel was protected by two moats and one outer wall. You could also reach the top of the Yapahuwa rock by taking the newly made stairs which begin from the landing that used to house the Temple of Tooth. The mountain top has a breathtaking panoramic view of the surroundings and hosts two ruined dagobas and a pond. A mid sized cave can be seen just before you reach the peak of the rock.

The rock base holds a cave temple, which has frescoes dating back to the Mahanuwara era. In addition the ruins of the the foundations of the King's Palace, Ministerial Residences and the King's Court can still be seen before you start ascending the stairs. There's a folk story that the great King Walagamba had been hiding in Yapahuwa during the days he was fleeing from the Chola invaders and gathering troops to take back the country. There's another folklore that suggests the famed "Suba & Yasa" incident occurred in Yapahuwa as well. Sadly, however, Yapahuwa has caught the miserable radar of relic hunters.

ගල මුදුනට.. | Towards the peak..

King Buwanekabahu I, who ruled Sri Lanka for 12 years was defeated by the South Indian Pandyan invaders, leading to the demise of the Yapahuwa Kingdom. The Pandyans become the guardians of the Holy Tooth Relic leading up to a 19 year interregnum period. During this transition period, Yapahuwa gradually becomes a ghost town that houses Buddhist monks and converts into a hermitage/monastery. The next Sinhala King to be ordained, King Parakramabahu III chooses to reign from Polonnaruwa, ending Yapahuwa's heyday in Sri Lankan history.

How to get there

Travel along the Puttalam road from Kurunegala. You'll have to turn right at the Padeniya junction on to the A57 road which winds up to Anuradhapura. Once you reach Daladagama, you're to turn right towards Maho. Drive past Maho towards the tiny town hamlet of Yapahuwa where you have to turn right (signboards are available to guide you) and travel a bit to reach the archaeological site.

In case you're taking the train, you can board a slow train and alight at the small railway station at Yapahuwa and find your way to the archaeological site on foot or by a tuk-tuk. Since most of the train do not stopover at the Yapahuwa station, it's advised to take a train upto Maho and board a bus or tuk-tuk to reach the ruins.

Nearby attractions

As Yapahuwa was an ephemeral capital, only a limited number of key attractions were established in and around Yapahuwa. Sites such as Reswehera, towards the north of Yapahuwa, and Avukana and Vijithapura towards the north-east of Yapahuwa would draw your interest. Ruins located at both Panduwasnuwara and Hatthikuchchi are quite distant from Yapahuwa, although they are well worth the visit.

Facilities

In actuality Yapahuwa is a small hamlet with a couple of shops. Hence, it is advised to fulfill your requirements from either Maho or Daladagama on your way to Yapahuwa. Also, bear in mind that you would not come across any supermarkets after you pass Wariyapola.

Yapahuwa Paradise Hotel, which is a Sri Lankan/German joint venture provides luxurious accommodation close to the archaeological site. However, this is quite an expensive option. Another alternative would be Hotel Shanthi which is located in between Maho and Yapahuwa, which has fair rates. Yet, there are some restrictions imposed on local tourists at Hotel Shanthi which might not be to your delight.

The Wanni Hathpatthu region in the North Western Province holds some of Sri Lanka's lesser known, yet historically important sacred sites. Among these, Reswehera Ancient Royal Temple (Sesseruwa), which is located close to the district boundary with Anuradhapura deserves more prominence due to the historical and artistic value of this site.
රැස්වෙහෙර හිටි පිළිමවහන්සේ | Reswehera Standing Statue

Importance and Historic Background

The main attraction at Reswehera is the 42 feet and 3 inch tall standing Buddha statue which is carved out of the standing rock. Archaeologists believe that this statue was commissioned during the reign of King Mahasen. The statue is an epitome of the timeless skills of Sri Lankan rock artists. In it's heyday the statue was protected by a statue house and evidence of that can still be seen.  Several folklore has arisen surrounding the statue. Among them, there's a rumor that the statue was the product of a rehearsal to the more renowned Avukana Buddha statue. There's another belief that Reswehera was the workings of an apprentice of the the chief architect of the Avukana statue as well. However, it should be noted that neither of these folktales have been proven as of yet.

This sacred facility hosts a "Dethispalaruha Bo Tree" (one of the first 32 saplings of Jayasrimahabodhi) which was planted at this venue by King Devanampiyatissa in 237 Buddhist Year. In addition to that, King Walagamba had added a couple of iconic cave temples alongside some other constructions in the year 104 B.C. at this venerated location. Historic evidence point out that the temple complex was renovated during the reign of the last Sinhalese King, Sri Weera Parakrama Narendrasinha. The current frescoes visible inside the two cave temples indicates influence from the Mahanuwara (Kandy) era and generates veneration alongside their priceless artistry. One of these cave temples hosts a sleeping statue 11.07m in length, the temple guard informed us that this statue house was guarded by a large cobra sometime back. Both cave statue houses are blessed with breathtaking frescoes, unfortunately these show signs of decay.
සැතපෙන බුදු පිළිමවහන්සේ | The Sleeping Buddha Statue
The temple complex is built on the side of a residual mountain, using it as a base. The vicinity is scattered with many ruins and its common belief that "Arahath" theros roamed in these woods centuries back. The small lake located at the foot of the mountain and the genuine rural aura of the village folk further augments the beauty of Reswehera.

Respect is due to the chief prelate and the team that keeps Reswehera in tact in spite of threats from wild elephant and relic hunters amid a massive forest. The authorities as well as you and I, all have a role to play in ensuring the sustenance of such national treasures.

How to get there

The drive up to Reswehera is quite taxing. From Galgamuwa, which is located along the A57 road in between Padeniya and Anuradhapura, take a right turn towards Saliyagama and travel 12km from where you should travel in a North Easterly direction for 13km passing Kathnoruwa junction to reach Reswehera. If you are coming via Yapahuwa, you are advised to reach Madagalla and drive towards Moragollagama. Take a left turn and reach Ehetuwewa. One can also reach Reswehera from Avukana through Galnewa. Once you are out of the main roads, the road conditions become quite treacherous, however the direction sign posts scattered along the road provides great assistance in finding Reswehera.

Nearby attractions

The Rajarata region is considered to be the cradle of Sri Lankan civilization and glory. Reswehera is situated amid a number of sites of great archaeological value in Rajarata. Among them, Hatthikuchchi, towards the north west of Reswehera, Avukana and Vijithapura temples towards the east of Reswehera and the Yapahuwa Kingdom situated towards the south of Reswehera come into prominence. In addition, the Nillakkama Bodhigaraya (an erection that safeguards the sacred Bo tree) is located nearby, a small distance off from the Galgamuwa - Saliyagama road. This Bodhigaraya is considered to be one of the most pristine in existence today.

Facilities

Reswehera is situated in one of the poorest areas of the Kurunegala District and thus it's advised for you to fulfill your requirements from a key city such as Galgamuwa, Ambanpola, Maho or Moragollagama along the way. The reason being that the likelihood of you finding even a small retail shop along the drive to Reswehera being remote. However, you will find the villagers at Reswehera selling various types of village agro products such as maadhan, woodapple and peanuts. While partaking in these, you are also advised to taste the Belimal drink with jaggery to quench your thirst.

If you require accommodation, you'd be able find them in Maho, Yapahuwa and Galgamuwa. There's a small Vishrama Shala in Reswehera with the basic facilities as well.

Sri Lanka is blessed with a vast array of monuments attesting the brilliance of ancient rock statue artists. However, it should be noted that such artistry is not limited to the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa Districts. Although it isn't as famous as many other statues residing in Rajarata, the Maligawila statues are masterpieces well worthy of local and international focus.

Maligawila is also a testament to the incomprehensible talent of the ancient rock carver in transforming a rough and heartless monolith into a fascinating masterpiece that embodies calm and peace of Buddhism very subtly.

Importance and Historic Background

In spite of the fact that Maligawila Ruins are filled with many historic monuments the focal points are the Dambegoda Bodhisatva Statue and the Standing Statue of Lord Buddha.

According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle Mahavamsa, the Dambegoda Bodhisatva Statue was built by King Dappula I of Rohana region. This is considered to be the largest Avalokitheshwara Bodhisatva statue in Sri Lanka and is perched on top of a small cliff that can be accessed through a scenic stairwell. Ruins of its former glory are visible on both sides of the stairwell.

Mounted on a carved lotus pedestal, this statue is the largest monolithic statue of Lord Buddha in Sri Lanka. The 34 foot statue resembles the "abhaya mudra" and is considered by scholars to be one of the most important masterpieces among the Sri Lankan statues. Except for the brick arch at the back the statue is freestanding, making it the world's largest freestanding Buddha statue. A matter of pride for out motherland. King Agrabodhi is credited with the erection of the Maligawila Buddhist statue, and it's believed to have been completed in 7th century A.D.

Renovation

Former President (then Prime Minister) Ranasinghe Premadasa initated the resurrection project of the 40 foot tall Dambegoda Bodhisatva statue in conjucture to a stage focusing on Buttala in his signature "Gam Udawa" project. This was considered to be one of the most remarkable Buddhist monument ressurection projects of the 20th century. In addition to this massive endeavor, President Premadasa uplifted the standard of the entire complex.

How to get there

Coming from Colombo along the A4 Highway, you will find the town of Buttala after passing Wellawaya. Take a right from the Buttala junction which also hosts a "Gam Udawa" clock tower. Just as you turn (after about 100 feet) there will be a road towards your left hand side adjacent to a three wheeler park. Take that left and travel along it into the deep heartlands of Moneragala district. You'll have to travel about 18km along this road and sign boards put up intermittently will assist you in finding the way.

Other attractions

The Moneragala district is filled with many buddhist monuments which aren't very well known to the Sri Lankan public. Among them, Dematamal Viharaya, which resides on the road connecting Buttala and Maligawila is of special significance.

In addition the Buduruwagala complex which can be accessed through the Wellawaya - Lunugamwehera road (A2) and the Yudaganawa Dagoba which can be reached through the Buttala - Koslanda road are places for your itinerary.

Konketiye Budugalge and the Kotiyagala Cave Temple are two other sights located around Buttala which attests the wonderous skills of the ancient Sri Lankan artist.

Facilities

The closest townships to Maligawila are Buttala and Okkampitiya. Hence it is advised for you to run your errands at these towns before you proceed to Maligawila. The region lacks reputed hotels and rest houses. However, Buttala would yield several options that would meet your budget. Vishrama shala are available at Maligawila and Buduruwagala with meager facilities.

"බෝට්ටු සවාරිය" | "The Boat Ride"

Nilaveli is one of the most pristine beach strips in the Eastern coast of Sri Lanka. Any visitor to this splendorous beach will see a few small islands standing firm couple of kilometers into the ocean. These are the Pigeon's Island, Sri Lanka's only island which has been proclaimed as a Wildlife Reserve.

A place mostly forgotten by visitors to Trincomalee & Nilaveli, Pigeon's Island is a mesmerizing place full of beautiful blue waters and white sands as well as the eye catching trees and shells scattered around the vicinity.  A traveler is likely to forget his/her problems from the external environs upon landing to the shores of this colorful island which is surrounded by underwater boulders. Despite this the sea is relatively calm and isn't that deep either. On the Eastern side of the island there is a small bay which is ideal for sea bathing.

"සුන්දර පරෙවි දූව" | "The magnificent Pigeon's Island"

How to get there

Travel north from Trincomalee on the Mullaitivu road. After about 12km you will reach the township of Nilaveli. There is a billboard on the right hand side of the road welcoming you to Nilaveli beach. Travel along the small road on the right hand side for about 200m till you get to the beach. Boat operators are available in the beach and they will offer you round trips to the Pigeon's Island for approx Rs. 2,500 (for a group). I suggest you go to the island spend several hours and call back the operator when you have had enough, that way you will spend a terrific time while getting value for the money you speng.

Facilities

Since the East was liberated from the terrorists many places that offer overnight accomodations have popped up across the region. And it’s easy to find accommodation in Trincomalee to any budget plan. On your way from Kantale to Trincomalee, once you pass Andankulam area you will see plenty of boards hung on the road side with the message “Accommodations available”. You can rent them out on a daily basis. The place we once stayed over in the Trincomalee-Anuradhapura road was very good. Like Hotel Oshin, located few miles before Trincomalee town on the A6 road, there are many other hotel facilities available. One can find several Wishrama Shala in Trinco and one such place is located near the fort itself. I have heard that one can get accomodation for free at the Welgam Wehera Wishrama Shala which is  located 13km away from the town. There are some high-end luxurious accommodations along the beach in Nilaveli if you prefer more comfort.

Due to the raging fires of war Wilpattu Wildlife Reserve was closed for a long time. But today the park which has an area exceeding 131,000 hectares has been reopened for the public. The park is the largest in Sri Lanka and has been split between Anuradhapura, Mannar & Puttalam Districts.

Wilpattu has been covered by dense shrubs and forests which has hindered the population of elephants to a segment of the park. Wilpattu which is equipped with close to 60 Villus has been renowned for its leopards and sloth bears. Deer, buffaloes, crocodiles, peacocks & fox as well as an assortment of birds are seen frequently in Wilpattu. Out of the 60 aforementioned Villus 2 are filled with Seawater despite having no connection to the sea whatsoever. It's believed that there was an earth shift thousands maybe millions of years back which has lifted the area of Wilpattu from the bottom of the sea. Another key factor that might support that theory is the presence of sea sand all over the park and the presence of sand dunes here and there.

The place where folklore points out to be the location to where Prince Wijeya landed is located within Wilpattu. In English its called the Horse point, but commonly referred to in Sinhala as Kudiramalei. Kudiramalei is one fascinating point with a precipice to the sea of about 20 feet and a quite intriguing formation of rocks about. Kalpitiya and the island chain there is clearly visible on the western horizon while a small journey on foot northwards will take us to a very calm and pristine beach which could be used for a bathe as well. Many ruins are to be seen around the park and one of them is the Quweni Palace. This area is believed to have been an epicenter of the Yakka community in the time period leading upto the landing of Prince Wijeya. Another location, Pomparippu, is a point with lots of prehistoric importance but by April of 2010 access to Pomparippu was not allowed as security forces were still scanning the area for potential dangers.

It's best to come to the park early morning (approx 6am). Since the park was reopened recently the animals are still very much shy to the presense of vehicles and humans. Getting a headstart in the morning where animal are very active would be a bonus to see some creatures. You need to possess a lot of luck to glimpse a leopard or a sloth bear. We were lucky enough to witness a sloth bear on our visit although the closest we saw of a leopard were its paw prints. Even if you won't see a leopard or a sloth bear the adventurous journey to Wilpattu will be unforgettable.

You will be allowed to prepare food within the park by the Wildlife Department, and the best location for that is the Kokmote Bunglow which is a structure made solely out of timber. Now abandoned it handsomely stands on the banks of the Moderagam Aru river resembling letter "A" on one side while resembling a "W" on the other. Having lunch at Kokmote will definitely rejuvenate your soul. The Moderagam Aru is also a serene waterway fit for a dip in the water and some fun as well.

The LTTE terrorists have run havoc within the park boundaries during their insurgent years and several park rangers have been killed in the process. One of Sri Lanka's prolific English novelists, Nihal De Silva passed away in 2006 when the jeep he was travelling in fell victim to a landmine explosion. Still remains of the jeep can be seen there. Nihal De Silva in his Graetian Prize Winning novel "The Road from Elephant Pass" depicts a lot of facts and sceneries based in Wilpattu. This book came alive as a Sinhala movie in 2009 under the name Alimankada. Its evident that the bunglows had served as makeshift LTTE hideouts since the parks closure in 2006.

Anyhow a Sri Lanka Navy base has been established within the park and they have destroyed parts of the forest for their requirements. Besides that a road clearance amounting to about 40-50 feet has been made by a leading politician under the banner of building a highway to Mannar. Due to this it is said that many creatures have lost their lives including a leopard, which is sad. There are other rumors that the said politician is only clearing the the road to a hotel he's constructing and to reap the timper. Either way safeguarding and protecting the Wilpattu National Park is an important responsibility for all Sri Lankans alike.

How to get there

The entrance to Wilpattu can be found on the the A12 road connecting Puttalam & Anuradhapura. From Puttalam travelling 30km in the direction of Anuradhapura will get you to Wilpattu junction, from there take a left turn and travel 7km to the main office (from Anuradhapura side drive 40km towards Puttalam, you'll get to Wilpattu junction just after passing Nocchiyagama). If you don't have a 4WD vehicle its better to rent one at Wilpattu junction itself. A jeep will cost about Rs.7000/= for the whole days journey (6am to 6pm). Nearby attractions

The famous Thabbowa Reserve is located close to Puttalam town while on the other side Anuradhapura, one of our ancient capitals is seen.

Facilities

Still the circuit bungalows in Wilpattu hasn't been rehabilitated. We can only be hopeful that they'll be repaired and reopened to the public in the near future. Keep Kokmote Bunglow in your mind for its a serene place made fully out of wood. Accomodations could be found in places like Wilpattu junction, Nocchiyagama & KalaOya in the vicinity, while in Puttalam & Anuradhapura you'll be able to get accomodation in abundance.
